The Iowa Credit Union League (ICUL) named Ascentra Credit Union Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Government Affairs Matthew De Bisschop its “Champion of the Year” to celebrate his dedication to credit union advocacy and significant contributions to the Iowa credit union movement.
Mr. De Bisschop received the ICUL’s Champion of the Year award during the league’s annual meeting Sept. 19 in Des Moines, according to an Ascentra news release.
As a member of the ICUL Champion program, he serves alongside other Iowa credit union employees who look to him as a mentor in the credit union advocacy movement.
In addition, he is also a member of the ICUL Advocacy Committee. It provides direction on legislative priorities while continuing to strengthen relationships with local legislators across Iowa.
Voice for credit unions
“Advocacy is an integral part of our ability to serve members at the highest and most impactful level, as at times, the credit union movement encounters opposition from banks when we introduce legislation that would ultimately improve the financial lives of Iowans,” Ascentra President and CEO Linda Andry said in the release.
“Matthew does an excellent job of keeping all of us informed, engaged and ready to act when needed. His role in governmental affairs and maintaining solid relationships with our legislators, will give Iowa credit unions a voice when most needed,” she added.
During Mr. De Bisschop’s tenure at Ascentra, he has been a strong advocate for the credit union. He continually researches and brings best practices to recruitment efforts and talent retention through well thought out compensation packages, benefits packages and personnel policies. His industry connections give Ascentra insight on ways the credit union could improve benefits for its staff.
“It’s very humbling to be recognized by my advocacy peers,” Mr. De Bisschop said in the release. “Fighting for equal access to financial products and services for all Iowans is deeply rewarding.”
In addition, Mr. De Bisschop was one of the QCBJ’s inaugural Forty Under 40 winners.
