The Western Illinois University History Department will host a “Global and Local Perspectives on Military History” Scholarly Conference from Friday to Saturday, April 14-15, at the Moline campus.
“We are hosting the conference on the QC campus to shine a light on its great facilities and to take advantage of its proximity to the historic Rock Island Arsenal, which conference participants will get to visit,” WIU History Professor Lee Brice said in a news release.
The conference will reflect WIU’s heritage in military history, going back to the origin of its nickname, the Fighting Leathernecks, as well as its teaching of American military history. The event also reflects its service to military personnel on campus today along with its partnerships with ROTC and the Veterans Resource Center.
The theme, “Global and Local Perspectives in Military History,” suggests two emphases in recent military history scholarship: study of global military practices that cross national boundaries and attention to the experiences of ordinary things affected by warfare, including common foot soldiers, civilians, refugees, animals and the natural environment.
The conference is organized into various military history themed scholarly panels and includes two keynote presentations on a variety of topics, including American, ancient, medieval, European, African and environmental history and more.
