LECLAIRE, Iowa – Vettes on the River – a show featuring more than 250 Corvettes that raises money to help veterans – is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, on the LeClaire levee.Organizers are already busy preparing for this year’s show. The event is free and open to the public.Anyone interested in bringing their Corvette and participating in the show should register here. The first 340 entrants will have priority Levee parking. All others will be assigned to the street adjacent to downtown LeClaire. Car registration is a minimum $25 donation. All proceeds from the show will go to local veterans organizations.“With this money, ramps for disabled veterans have been built, along with helping so many veterans with essential life needs such as water bills, refrigerators, rent, rides to doctor appointments and so much more,” said Sherry Zaruba-Cassatt, president of the Vettes on the River organization.She added that the show averages about 250 Corvettes every year. One year, the show a had more than 650 vehicles on display.Some of the show sponsors: Bruce Enterprises, Eriksen Chevrolet, Cassatt Drywall, Zarubas Salon, Haffarnan & Associates, LLC – American Family Insurance, Sears Manufacturing, Quad City Performance, and Dan Dolan Homes.Here is the schedule of the Aug. 26 events:
8 a.m.: Gates open.
8 a.m.: Breakfast at the Levee pavilion.
8-10 a.m.: Registration.
9 a.m.: Raffle drawings, silent auction and 50/50 begins.
10:15 a.m.: Call to assemble.
10:30 a.m.: Lunch at levee pavilion.
10:30 a.m.: Color guard ceremony.
11 a.m.: First Twilight Riverboat cruise. Others will be at 1:30 and 4 p.m.
3 p.m.: Awards ceremony, 50/50 drawing, raffle items, LeClaire Mayor’s Choice Award, and donation presentation to Vietnam veterans.
More information on Vettes on the River also is available on the group’s Facebook page.The idea for Vettes on the River began in 2010, according to Randy Huber, an organizer of the event.“My wife Jane came to me and observed that our Mid-West Corvette club, while doing a great job of creating charity events to raise funds for our local Children’s Charities, did so on our own and mainly kept to the confines of the club. She suggested we attempt to interact with another Corvette club and share each other’s successes and ideas. I said ‘go for it’ and she contacted the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Corvette club and they were all for having a social meeting. Each club got as many of their members as they could together and we each planned our own drive-outs that would end up in the Amana Colonies, Iowa, for lunch and a ‘meet and greet,’” Mr. Huber wrote on the Vettes on the River website.In time, those meetings turned into the Vettes on the River event.
