The Knights of Columbus Allouez Council No. 658 recently presented its annual public safety awards to a Rock Island police detective and a Rock Island firefighter.

BRETT BUCHEN

Detective Brett Buchen was named the 2023 Police Officer of the Year and Firefighter Brennan Kennedy was named the 2023 Firefighter of the Year. The men were recognized during the Knights’ 44th annual Civic Awards Night on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Stern Center, downtown Rock Island.

Each year, the Knights recognize a City of Rock Island police officer and firefighter — chosen by their peers — as honorees for outstanding service.

In a news release, the City of Rock Island said it is proud of the excellent customer service provided by its public safety professionals, and that having Mr. Buchen and Mr. Kennedy honored by a community group reinforces this level of commitment to service.

The awards were presented after a banquet Sunday night.

BRENNAN KENNEDY

“Firefighter Kennedy has demonstrated his dedication to the department and is reflected in his nomination,” Fire Chief Robert Graff said in the release. “He works diligently to purchase assets for the department, continues his education in Water Operations and Technical Rescue, mentors students and junior members, and shares his training with the department.”
