WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – A new 45-home subdivision – called the Dutton Housing Project – is getting underway in this Muscatine County community. And that’s just the start. At least 70 new homes are planned here in the coming years, according to economic development officials.If all goes according to plan, construction of the first of those homes will begin soon and families will start moving into the new homes next summer, according to Kenneth Brooks, executive director of the West Liberty Economic Area Development Corporation (WeLead,) the business and economic development advocacy organization in West Liberty.“Dirt is being moved and we are preparing to start on infrastructure. Foundations will be poured this fall, and the developer hopes to have families moving into homes by this time next year,” Mr. Brooks told the QCBJ on Tuesday, Aug. 8. The WeLead official added: “With our businesses and industry expanding, we want to make sure that the people that work in West Liberty have the opportunity to live here in our community, to raise their families here, they deserve that opportunity, and we are here to make it happen.”A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the new subdivision, which will be on 10 acres on the northside of West Liberty. The Dutton Housing Project will bring a mixture of duplexes, single-family homes and townhomes to the community. The new subdivision also will be near an expanded trail system and a wet basin for water retention, which will be stocked with fish and available for use by the residents of the development.“We are very excited to be doing this project in West Liberty,” said Jason Dumont of GHS Development, the property developer of the new subdivision. “Over the last few years we have seen the commitment and excitement within the community to improve the school's facilities through a massive fundraising effort, the results of which are a nearly complete state-of-the-art athletic facility on the west side of town.”“The city administration is committed to bringing more housing opportunities to the community, and WeLead, the economic development office, has been very helpful in helping us to fill the housing needs in West Liberty,” Mr. Dumont said. Greyson Conlon will be handling all of the marketing and listings of our new subdivision through Robertson Realty, he added.“Jason Dumont and his team are not only bringing their knowledge, skills, and experience to the table with this housing project, but they are also bringing a great deal of passion and enthusiasm,” said Mr. Brooks. “These 45 homes are just the first steps towards the more than seventy that we plan on bringing to market within the next year or so, and we aren’t stopping there. Housing remains one of WeLead’s top priorities.”The Dutton Housing Project is the latest house development in West Liberty. Last year, the community received a $200,000 grant to turn a historic building into commercial space and apartments.Also, last year, West Liberty received a $100,000 grant from the state to renovate a condemned building at 115 Third St. into commercial space and two apartments.
