Firas Harb loves the elbow room his furniture business has in its new home in downtown Silvis.
“People are going crazy over the amount of space in here. … In our old place, they had to climb over things to get anywhere,” said Mr. Harb, owner of Nova Furniture Plus at 1026 First Ave., across the street from the Silvis post office.
Nova opened for business a couple of weeks ago. But on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, it was time to celebrate the move to its new home.
More than 100 people helped Mr. Harb and his family celebrate the grand opening and relocation of the family-owned Nova business in downtown Silvis. The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony with City of Silvis officials, and a party-like atmosphere that included music, lots of food and a bouncy house for the kids.
Mr. Harb said his Nova Furniture business was located at 2002 16th St., Moline, for years. That was a good site, but he outgrew the location and needed something much bigger.
Nova got something bigger with the downtown Silvis location. The building features almost 20,000 square feet with a retail floor size of about 11,000 square feet.
It also has big, beautiful windows that were recently installed in the front of the building.
For a time, those windows were boarded up, and the building was not the most attractive structure in the city, said Silvis Mayor Matt Carter.
“This building looks absolutely wonderful now,” said Mr. Carter during Sunday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The mayor told the QCBJ that before Nova moved in, the building on First Avenue had been closed for two or three years. At one time, it was home to a billiards supply company. In fact, there are still signs in the building parking lot advertising the Quad City Bar & Stool company.
Even though it is a new chapter for the Nova Furniture Plus company, it’s a business homecoming of sorts for Mr. Harb and his family. He said his father owned a business in Silvis years ago. When Mr. Harb was looking for a new home for Nova, his father suggested he look at the First Avenue building.
Today Nova’s new home features a wide variety of furniture and accessories. Some of those offerings include:
1 of 4
- Beds and bedroom furniture. (Mr. Harb said king-sized beds are some of his best-selling items at Nova.)
- Sofa sets
- Table and chair sets.
- Love seats.
- Rugs and carpets
- Artwork for walls, and much more.
