The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois (GSEIWI) organization announced on Tuesday, July 21, the selection of Nicole Cisne Durbin as its next chief executive officer.
The GSEIWI, which is headquartered in Bettendorf, is a regional nonprofit council serving nearly 20,000 girls ages 5 to 17 across 31 counties in Iowa and seven counties in Illinois. It has regional offices in Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. Part of the national Girl Scouts of the USA, it provides leadership development programs focused on STEM, entrepreneurship, life skills, and the outdoors.
Ms. Cisne Durbin will officially join the organization on Tuesday, Sept. 8, bringing more than two decades of leadership experience focused on youth development, community engagement, and strengthening organizations that serve children and families.
The appointment follows a comprehensive search led by the Board of Directors to identify a leader who embodies the organization’s mission and is prepared to guide Girl Scouts into its next chapter of growth and impact.
“As we looked to the future, we sought a leader with a demonstrated commitment to community, a passion for developing future leaders, and a proven ability to build strong, mission-driven organizations,” said Tracy Schwind, board chair of Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. “Nicole’s experience, leadership style, and dedication to serving others made her the clear choice. We are excited to welcome her to the Girl Scout movement.”
Ms. Cisne Durbin currently serves as CEO of Family Resources, where she has led strategic growth initiatives, strengthened financial sustainability, expanded community partnerships, and championed innovative programs serving youth and families throughout the region. Known for her collaborative and approachable leadership style, she has built a reputation for listening to stakeholders, empowering teams, and creating meaningful community impact.
Since its inception, Family Resources has been dedicated to serving children and families in the Quad Cities community. Today, the organization provides support and services to thousands of individuals and families throughout Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Family Resources celebrated its 175th anniversary last year.
“I am honored to join Girl Scouts and become part of an organization that has inspired generations of girls to discover their strengths, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in their communities,” said Ms. Cisne Durbin. “I look forward to meeting girls, volunteers, staff, donors, and community partners and learning from the incredible people who make this mission possible. Together, we will continue creating opportunities that help girls thrive and achieve their full potential.”
The board also extends its sincere gratitude to Diane Nelson for her dedicated leadership and service to the council.
“Diane has been an extraordinary advocate for girls and for the Girl Scout mission,” said Ms. Schwind. “Her leadership has helped position our council for future success, and we are deeply grateful for her dedication and lasting contributions.”
Reflecting on the transition, Ms. Nelson shared her confidence in the organization’s future.
“It has been a privilege to serve this council and to work alongside such dedicated volunteers, staff, families, and supporters,” said Ms. Nelson. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and excited to welcome Nicole as the next CEO. Her experience, passion for community, and commitment to empowering others make her an outstanding choice to lead Girl Scouts into the future.”
To ensure continuity during the transition period, Allison Johnson will serve as interim CEO until Ms. Cisne Durbin’s arrival in September. Ms. Johnson will work closely with staff and the board to support ongoing operations and ensure a seamless leadership transition.
Over her first several months, Ms. Cisne Durbin plans to focus on listening and learning by meeting with girls, families, volunteers, employees, donors, and community partners across the council. These conversations will help inform future priorities while building on the strong foundation already in place.
