Western Illinois University is welcoming experienced chemistry professor Garima Mishra to spearhead the inaugural offering of chemistry courses to expand its STEM courses on the Quad Cities campus, WIU announced in a news release.
The addition is “pivotal” in WIU’s strategic plan to offer more STEM courses to support its engineering programs, the university said.
“I am excited to be a part of WIU-QC campus and set up this new chemistry lab,” Ms. Mishra said in the release. “Being able to teach the CHEM 201 course for the first time will be rewarding in many ways.”
Ms. Mishra received her doctorate degree in polymer chemistry in 2007 from Harcourt Butler Technological University, India. Throughout her education, she has published seven research articles on naturally occurring organic compounds, the release states.
Prior to joining WIU, Ms. Mishra worked as a scientist at the Agharkar Research Institute in India. She later joined the corporation Halliburton as a senior scientist in petrochemicals, publishing technical papers and presenting articles at national and international conferences, according to the release.
During a short stay in the Quad Cities in 2015, she also taught Introduction to Chemistry at Black Hawk College in Moline.
“WIU is thrilled to welcome Professor Mishra to the Quad Cities Campus. Mishra joins a community of outstanding faculty who bring real-world experience to the classroom and who serve as mentors dedicated to student success,” WIU-QC Vice President of Campus Operation Kristi Mindrup said in the release.
“WIU is grateful for the recent grant from Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust that funded new science laboratory spaces on campus that expand access to STEM-focused courses and hands-on research experiences for students,” she added.
