A class on diversity, equity and inclusion will be offered by Eastern Iowa Community Colleges at the Scott Community College Urban Campus, 101 W. Third St., Davenport.

The class “Stop Watering the DEI&B Leaves, Treat the Roots” will be 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, May 24. There is no fee to attend, but register at eicc.edu/dei to confirm your spot.

During the class, Anthony Arrington will discuss the value of facilitation and focusing on root issues as the most impactful approach to influencing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEI&B) culture in organizations.  He will discuss the need to define culture, determine if there is a culture problem, and uncover the roots of the problem before determining sustainable solutions.

Some of the items to be discussed will include:

  • How to distinguish between collective regard and representative regard.
  • How to extract authentic words and feelings of stakeholders to determine if there is a DEI&B culture problem.
  • The difference between root issues and symptoms, and why it’s important to address the former.
  • The six root issues that define DEI&B of every organization.
  • Why training has minimal impact on change without addressing root issues first.

Mr. Arrington is a certified diversity executive, diversity-to-belonging facilitator and culture assessor with more than 25 years of experience in the field.
