The Group Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists, P.C began work this week on a $5 million, 7,300-square-foot expansion that will include a new addition and some interior renovation at its existing 5350 Eastern Ave., Davenport, building.

Expansion and growth is nothing new for The Group. Its  Revive at the Group medical spa, located near The Group’s medical clinic at 53rd Street and Eastern Avenue,  was No. 1 on the QCBJ’s inaugural 2022 list of Fastest Growing Companies. It also ranked third on that list a year later in 2023.

Construction began on this latest expansion – which is focused on The Group’s medical clinic – on Tuesday, July 30, a news release from The Group said. It is expected to take about a year to complete. Davenport-based Russell is the builder for the project that was designed by Streamline Architects of East Moline.

The project and its design will enhance the patient experience and improve access to maternal and women’s health services, the release said. The new spaces will feature 13 new examination rooms, four new procedure rooms, two patient education rooms and a new conference room. The addition will allow for more immediate scheduling opportunities for new and existing patients.

In addition to increasing patient capacity and improving patient access, The Group said it will begin offering mammography screenings starting in October 2024. It expects to provide more than 3,000 screenings each year.

Dr. Briana Barclay, a physician and owner of The Group, said she is excited that the new services made possible by the project will help The Group better serve current patients and women in the Quad Cities and surrounding area.

Mammography a focus

“It has always been a goal to offer on-site mammography, making our practice more of a one-stop shop for our patients,” Dr. Barclay said. “We recommend mammography screenings annually for women over 40, and for younger women based on a personal risk assessment.”

She added: “Having the ability to schedule patients for a mammogram at the same time as their annual exam will be more convenient for them. Our goal is to save more lives through early detection, and making the scheduling process as easy as possible may encourage more regular screenings.”

Since relocating and expanding in 2014, The Group has experienced significant growth. The number of patient visits has increased 92% since 2014. The Group currently has 22 providers. It includes eight physicians, seven midwives, five nurse practitioners and two physician assistants. Six of the 22 providers joined the practice between 2023 and 2024.

Dr. Kenneth Naylor, another physician and owner of The Group, talked about what the expansion of maternal and health services will mean for area women.

“I am excited to be able to meet the needs of more patients and to add a service such as mammography that will benefit all women in our area,” Dr. Naylor said. “Despite the great challenges facing health care, our team has devised impressive solutions. Our unique communication and collaboration, along with our education and experience, guide our decisions and health care recommendations.”

Patients celebrate project

A number of patients of The Group celebrated the expansion of the women’s health clinic on The Group’s Facebook page. One pointed out that drawings of the addition had no purple on them. It was a reference to the favorite color of The Group’s well loved Dr. Anita Pinc. She was killed in a boating collision two years ago. The clinic promised the poster “the purple lights will shine bright” in her honor.

Dave Larson, practice administrator at The Group, said the new square footage will allow for more immediate scheduling opportunities for patients.

“The continued expansion of The Group demonstrates our dedication to this community and commitment to our patients,” Mr. Larson said. “We have a strong team of knowledgeable and experienced professionals all working together towards a common goal: to improve patient access to quality, compassionate health services. We appreciate everyone involved in the planning process and the ongoing support of those we have served and continue to serve.”

Though construction may not significantly impact hours or appointments, The Group physicians are asking for patience as they navigate construction and space restrictions.
