MONMOUTH, Illinois –Monmouth College has been awarded $999,764 in federal grant money to fund scholarships for low-income students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
The funding aims to prepare students for careers in high-paying STEM fields. The award was announced in a news release Tuesday, April 29, by U.S. Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-Illinois).
Mr. Sorensen stated the funding will ensure individuals, regardless of financial status, have the opportunity to pursue STEM careers, which is crucial for economic growth and job creation.
Mr. Sorensen, of Moline, has advocated for federal funding to support STEM programs at colleges and universities in Illinois’ 17th District. In 2023, he announced $4.5 million in federal grant funding for STEAM talent development strategies and supported a $15 million project for a new STEM/Science Lab building at Illinois State University last year.
