U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Moline, whose 17th Congressional District includes the Rock Island Arsenal, has been appointed to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee.

U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Moline, announced his reappointment to the House Committee on Agriculture along with assignments to seats on two critical subcommittees: the General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit Subcommittee and the Conservation,  Research, and Biotechnology Subcommittee.

Mr. Sorsensen’s office said in a news release that these new roles will enhance the second-term congressman’s ability to advocate more effectively for Illinois farmers and rural communities in the 17th District. The district is a national leader in agriculture, boasting nearly 6,500 farms and a proud legacy of producing corn and soybeans that feed and fuel the world as well as home to agricultural innovator, John Deere, the release said.

“Representing the hardworking farmers and rural families of Illinois’ 17th District—the capital of agriculture – is an incredible honor,” Mr. Sorensen said. “This seat gives me the chance to champion priorities on the House Agriculture Committee like working to secure crop insurance, opening new markets for our corn and soybeans, and protecting the land and resources that make our region a leader in agriculture.”

The Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit handles policies for crops such as corn and soybeans, as well as crop insurance programs that help farmers recover from severe weather and market challenges. Mr. Sorensen’s focus will be on making sure Illinois-grown products reach markets efficiently, bringing profits back to farmers and strengthening rural economies.

The Subcommittee on Conservation, Research, and Biotechnology focuses on conserving resources and promoting sustainable farming. With his meteorology background, Mr. Sorensen will work to ensure farmers can protect and maintain their land for future generations while adapting to changing weather conditions.

The House Agriculture Committee is responsible for shaping federal agricultural policy, including drafting the farm bill – a major legislative package that impacts crop insurance, rural development, conservation programs, and nutrition assistance.
