The Beta Zeta Epsilon (BZE) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society at Scott Community College (SCC) has been awarded an Honors in Action grant of $1,000 from the Mellon Foundation and PTK International for a SMART Recovery program.

This funding will support the establishment of a collegiate SMART Recovery group on campus, open to students and the surrounding Quad Cities community.

SMART Recovery is a science-based mutual support program that helps individuals overcome addiction and build a fulfilling life. It emphasizes self-empowerment and uses cognitive-behavioral techniques to help participants develop coping strategies and achieve their recovery goals.

The creation of a SMART Recovery group at SCC reflects the chapter’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for students facing challenges related to substance use, the college said in a news release.

BZE President Chris Bolin and Vice President Joeanna Moore were instrumental in the grant writing process and will lead the BZE Chapter through the Honors In Action Project for 2024, which exemplifies their commitment to the PTK tenets of service and scholarship.

SCC’S SMART Recovery group is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the SCC Urban Campus, 101 W. 3rd St., Davenport. The group will be a welcoming environment for individuals looking to share their experiences and learn from one another as they navigate their recovery journeys.

Phi Theta Kappa and the Mellon Foundation collaborated to offer these fall 2023 grants, underscoring the importance of Honors in Action projects in developing leadership skills and promoting civic engagement among students. The BZE chapter is committed to reporting on the impact of this grant and sharing updates on their SMART Recovery initiatives.
