‘Gather for the Cure’ event will be Oct. 14

The third annual Gather for the Cure – an event to highlight breast cancer awareness – will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Scott County Park in the Whispering Pines Indoor Shelter.

The event is an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, remember those lives lost to breast cancer, and learn about available programs and resources.

Gather for the Cure is the primary fundraiser for the Genesis Voucher Program. The fundraiser will help fill the funding gap created when the Susan G. Komen organization ended financial support to voucher programs in the Quad-Cities region in 2021.

Some of the highlights of Saturday’s Gather for Cure will include:

  • One-mile walk beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Presentation by a breast cancer survivor.
  • “Pink Heals” Fire Truck.
  • Pink-themed selfie station.
  • Vendor stations.
  • Creative art by Gilda’s Club of the Quad Cities,
  • Refreshments will be available.
  • Bubble blowing at 11:55 a.m. in memory of those people lost and in honor of those fighting breast cancer.

Because cost should never be a barrier to accessing essential life-saving breast imaging, the Genesis Foundation is committed to raising funds needed to meet the demand – an estimated $50,000 annually.

“Either directly or indirectly, everyone in our community has been affected by breast cancer,” said Diane Koster, Genesis Women’s Health Grant Program specialist. “This event helps us build support in our community to fight breast cancer with the hope that in the future, we will never lose anyone again to this disease.”

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2022 there were an estimated 2,810 new cases of female breast cancer in Iowa and 11,530 new cases in Illinois.
