IMEG acquires Philadelphia-area engineering firm

Move expands reach into gaming industry

Giovanetti Shulman Associates Consulting Engineers, a Philadelphia-area mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and low voltage engineering firm, has joined the Quad Cities-based IMEG, the companies announced Monday, Oct. 2.

IMEG, with headquarters in Rock Island, is the fifth largest engineering firm in the U.S. With the merger, IMEG becomes the largest privately owned engineering firm in the gaming industry. Previously, it was ranked the No. 2 Casino Engineering Firm in the country, according to BD+C magazine’s rankings.

The merger with GSA enhances IMEG’s national, full-service engineering firm’s existing services in the Philadelphia region as well as its national gaming portfolio, IMEG said in a news release announcing the merger. Bringing GSA into the fold will add to IMEG’s gaming portfolio, particularly in the east.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1982 by Richard Giovanetti and Mark Shulman, GSA has provided sustainable engineering design services on a wide variety of projects in the entertainment, commercial, cultural, education and health care markets, among others. As the firm grew, the two founders created a highly technical team supported by its quality staff, including Connie Giovanetti.

“We are excited to add the team from GSA and deepen our bench of expertise, particular in the gaming and entertainment industries,” IMEG President/CEO Paul VanDuyne said in the release. “Their passion for the built environment, along with their creative and technical skills, are vital characteristics that match IMEG’s own priorities.”

GSA President Richard Giovanetti said the firm is looking forward to being part of IMEG and the ability it brings to offer clients a full line of engineering services—all with the same local team. He and Mr. Shulman will continue to serve as local team leaders and the firm will continue to operate out of its existing Broomall, Pennsylvania, location. It will do business as Giovanetti Shulman Associates, now IMEG, until a full integration.

The merger with GSA will add 28 new employees to IMEG, a 100% employee-owned and results-driven company with a passion for transforming environments and communities through high-performance design and infrastructure. It employs 2,400 team members across its 82 offices.

IMEG serves regions and markets with full-service, in-house engineering design. IMEG is a Top 5 Engineering Firm in the U.S. (BD+C) and ranked #57 on ENR’s Top 500 Design Firms list.
