Western Illinois University, in conjunction with WQPT-PBS, will host a free Bilingual Family Concert, “Being Bilingual Rocks” for Quad Cities families 6-7 p.m. Saturday, May 18, on the WIU-Quad Cities campus in Moline. Rain or shine, all are welcome.
WIU and WQPT PBS also are hosting a Ready to Learn Multilingual Education Conference from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. It’s in partnership with WIU-QC, The Grad Center, the Early Childhood Coalition of the Quad Cities and StarNet Regions I & III.
“Chicago-based musicians, Alina and Hamlet, are joining us as keynote presenters at our Multilingual Education Conference. And it just made sense to continue the day of learning and fun with a family-focused music event,” WQPT Director of Outreach and Education Melissa Gravert said in a news release. “The free concert will feature the entire Being Bilingual Rocks band. We are so excited to have these award-winning musicians perform for our community,”
The concert will celebrate love, acceptance and diversity. It weaves together an eclectic fusion of Latin, blues, bluegrass, ska and original as well as traditional songs from Latin America. Everyone is welcome to sing, dance, learn Spanish/English and play musical games in a joyful, unique blend of cultures, sounds and languages.
