Wanted: Food safety and consumer safety inspectors

The federal government is bringing its search for food inspectors and consumer safety inspectors to Davenport, where it will hold a recruitment event.

That event is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, at the IowaWORKS Center, 1801 E. Kimberly Road.

During that event, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will be recruiting for the critical positions of food inspectors and consumer safety inspectors.

“Thousands of FSIS inspectors across the U.S. conduct daily inspection activities, verifying domestic industry compliance with applicable food safety regulatory requirements,” according to a statement from Jackson Collier of the FSIS. “FSIS’ food safety mission extends to ensuring the safety and integrity of FSIS-regulated products exported to more than 140 countries, as well as imported food products.”

“Food inspectors in private commercial slaughtering plants provide the first line of defense against diseased and adulterated meat and poultry,” he added. “They are responsible for much of the day-to-day in-plant inspection of animals before and after slaughter.”

At the hiring event, potential candidates will have an opportunity to apply for open positions and receive assistance with the USAJOBS application process. According to FSIS, there is a $5,000 hiring bonus.

Qualifications for the jobs include: bachelor’s degree; experience in a meat or poultry plant, meat cutter/butcher, quality control/lab, chef/cook or veterinary technician; and U.S. citizenship is required.
