Christian Care in Rock Island is inviting Quad Citians to run or walk in the shoes of the region’s homeless at its third annual Frigid Feet event on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The day will kick off at 9 a.m. at Christian Care Rescue Mission at 2209 Third Ave. in downtown Rock Island. The mission is the only 365-day-a-year meal site open for all in need. Last year it served nearly 38,000 meals to men, women and children in the Quad Cities.
Frigid Feet 2024 participants will have the option of taking a two-mile guided walk along the Rock Island bike path or take part in a new 5K run. Both routes will conclude at Christian Care. There attendees will be served hot soup and a sandwich courtesy of the Rock Island HyVee.
Frigid Feet is designed to draw attention to the 450 men, women and children in the Quad Cities that are experiencing homelessness on any given night.
Frigid Feet is designed to raise awareness of this by replicating what the unsheltered community experiences on a day-to-day basis just to get a warm meal during the brutal winter months, the release said.
To ensure a “realistic mini-experience” Christian Care said, the walk and run will take place “in rain, shine, snow, sleet, wind or temperature.”
How you can help
Christian Care Executive Director Frank Roe said, “We have great hope that many caring citizens will join us to briefly endure what many of our fellow citizens experience all day, everyday.”
Pre-registration is required. For a $30 registration fee, Frigid Feet participants will receive a commemorative long-sleeve Frigid Feet T-shirt in addition to their soup and sandwich. For a $40 registration fee, participants will get a long-sleeve Frigid Feet hoodie.
All proceeds will go to support Christian Care programs and services.
