As it celebrates its 150th year in the retail business, Von Maur Department Store is expanding its footprint to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a new store scheduled to open in the fall of 2024.
In a news release issued Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Davenport-based department store chain announced plans to open a 118,000-square-foot store to anchor South Hills Village in Pittsburgh. The store, which will employ more than 100 associates most of whom will be full time, will be the company’s first location in Pennsylvania.
The company said renovations will begin this fall on a former Sears store there to create a new two-level Von Maur store. The store will feature the company’s signature exterior brick façade and interior ambiance complete with original artwork, open-floor plan and music from the store’s grand piano.
“The unrivaled shopping experience created at South Hills Village through its enticing mix of shopping, dining and entertainment makes it a one-of-a-kind destination and an outstanding location for us to open our first location in Pennsylvania,” Jim von Maur, company president, said in the release.
“While our upcoming opening may be the first time customers have heard about or experienced Von Maur, they’ll discover that we’re all about delivering the best customer service and brand name merchandise in the industry,” he added. “We are looking forward to becoming a part of the Pittsburgh community and showcasing a unique shopping environment for our customers for years to come.”
Founded in downtown Davenport 150 years ago, Von Maur has a reputation for its outstanding selection of brand name and specialty apparel, shoes, accessories and gifts. The new store will feature products from leading brands such as Bobbi Brown, Peter Millar, TravisMathew, Hammitt, Lilly Pulitzer, John Hardy and Vuori, among others.
In addition, Von Maur is widely regarded for its customer service, including an interest-free charge card, flexible return policy, free gift wrapping, loyalty rewards program and shipping services. It offers its associates above-market wages, excellent benefits, career advancement opportunities, and a positive, professional work environment.
In June, Von Maur was recognized as the top department store in the country by Newsweek’s “America’s Best Retailers 2022” ranking. Von Maur bested – in order of their ranking in the survey – these four well-known retail giants: Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
The new store and market expansion to Pennsylvania builds upon the family-owned company’s targeted national growth strategy. After previously opening in states such as Georgia, New York, Alabama and Oklahoma, Von Maur now operates 36 stores across 15 states.
This spring, the retailer opened its fourth Michigan location in Rochester Hills and will open its second Wisconsin location in Madison in October.
In an interview late last year with the Quad Cities Regional Business Journal, Mr. von Maur said the company is “excited about 2022.” He discussed the challenges and uncertainty the chain faced as it reopened and emerged from the difficulties that COVID-19 created for the Midwest retailer.
But in his optimistic view of 2022, he said “I think the pandemic brought the stores back to the forefront. People realized they enjoy shopping and if you make it a real experience, which is what we’re good at, you’ll be successful.”
Mr. von Maur, the fourth generation company leader, is the great grandson of founder Charles Jacob “C.J.” von Maur.
