UnityPoint sets Aug. 23 chronic vein disease event in Muscatine

A free in-person event, “Understanding Chronic Vein Disease,” will be presented by Dr. Mark Williams, a surgeon with UnityPoint Clinic – Mulberry, on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. presentation is in the Muscatine Community School District Administration Building, Muskie Room, 2900  Mulberry Ave., Muscatine, Iowa.

The session is part of UnityPoint Health’s commitment to educating the community about important health topics and prevention methods.

Chronic vein disease, or chronic vein insufficiency happens when your leg veins don’t allow blood to flow back up to the heart. This can cause blood to pool in your legs causing swelling, feelings of heaviness or pain in the legs. Of the more than 30 million Americans affected with  the disease, only 1.9 million seek treatment annually. A vast majority remain undiagnosed and untreated, according to a UnityPoint Clinic news release.

The discussion will benefit:

  • People over 50
  • People who are overweight
  • People who sit or stand for long periods of time or those with a sedentary lifestyle
  • Women and pregnant women who at higher risk.

“During the presentation, I will share more information about the symptoms of chronic vein  disease and their impact on your long-term health, if ignored,” Dr. Williams said. “Chronic  venous insufficiency tends to get worse over time, but it can be managed if treatment is started  early. By taking the right steps, you can help ease discomfort and prevent the condition from  getting worse.”
