In the wake of the severe storms Monday night, July 15, that struck parts of Iowa and western Illinois, U-Haul has announced it will offer free storage to residents impacted, including those in the Quad Cities.
Six U-Haul stores across the two states will offer 30 days of free storage and U-Box container usage, the company said in a news release Wednesday, July 17.
The Quad Cities experienced 97 mph winds on Monday, causing a derecho that damaged homes and businesses. Residents of Davenport, Moline, Rock Island as well as Des Moines were left without power and experienced road closures due to debris from the thunderstorms.
According to U-Haul, the third largest self-storage operator in North America, access to dry and secure self-storage units and portable storage containers is critical for communities during the recovery process.
“We’ve seen and heard of damage and power outages throughout the Quad Cities,” Mike Shorter, the president of U-Haul Company of Eastern Iowa, said in the release. “We want to help our neighbors dealing with the aftermath of these storms as they prepare to clean up or rebuild their homes.”
The 30-day free offer applies to new self-storage and portable container rentals and is based on availability. U-Box containers can be delivered and picked up to residences at no additional cost as part of the disaster relief program.
Participating U-Haul locations in Iowa are in Ankeny (2), West Des Moines as well as Davenport, Moline and Rock Island. People seeking more information or needing to arrange storage services should contact their nearest participating facility. The Quad Cities locations are:
