Stanley Consultants host MATHCOUNTS student competition

UPDATE: Because of the pending winter storm, the MATHCOUNTS competition has been rescheduled to Thursday, Feb. 20.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Area middle school and elementary students soon will be taking part in a  nationwide mathematics competition in this community.

Nearly 50 Muscatine area students will participate in the MATHCOUNTS 2025 Chapter Competition on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Stanley Consultants, 225 Iowa Ave. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m.

Muscatine-based Stanley Consultants, in conjunction with the Show will be hosting the event. The Iowa Engineering Society Muscatine Chapter has organized the annual event for more than 30 years. 

Participating schools include: Franklin, Jefferson, Grant, Mulberry, McKinley and Madison elementary schools and Susan Clark Middle School, all in Muscatine,,and West Liberty schools. 

MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide mathematics competition held in various locations across the United States. Topics covered include geometry, counting, probability, number theory and algebra. The competition is comprised of four rounds:

  • Sprint Round: Focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator.
  • Target Round: Focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. Students receive four pairs of problems and have six minutes to complete each pair, assuming the use of a calculator.
  • Team Round: Focuses on problem-solving and collaboration. Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems, assuming the use of a calculator.
  • Countdown Round: focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. 

The top winning team and individuals will advance to the state competition.
