RI County 4-H members and alumni receive scholarships

The Rock Island Rotary Club, in partnership with the Rock Island County Extension and 4-H Education Foundation, awarded five scholarships totaling $4,750 recently during the 51st annual Bert Blood Memorial Scholarship awards ceremony at the Quad City Botanical Center, according to a news release.

Rock Island County 4-H members who received scholarships include:  

  • Matthew Callahan, son of Michael and Amie Callahan, of Moline, received a $1,500 scholarship. After graduating from Moline High School in May, he plans to attend The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and major in art.
  • Anna Taylor, daughter of Robert and Chris Taylor of Sherrard, received a $1,250 scholarship. After graduating from Sherrard High School in May, she plans to attend Black Hawk East to major in agriculture with an emphasis on equestrian studies.
  • Ella Goodnight, daughter of Luci and Ben Goodnight of Illinois City, received a $1,000 scholarship. After graduating from Rockridge High School in May, she plans to attend Luther College to study neuroscience.

Rock Island County 4-H alumni also received scholarships, including:

  • Tyler Bohnert, of East Moline, who is enrolled in agri-business at University of Wisconsin, Platteville, received a $500 scholarship. 
  • Evan DeKeyrel, of Milan, who is enrolled in ag production at Black Hawk College East, Kewanee, Illinois, received a $500 scholarship.  

The Rock Island Rotary Club has awarded the scholarships since 1973 in honor of Albert M. “Bert” Blood, a longtime Rock Island businessman who organized the Rotary Club’s annual Rural/Urban program up to his death in 1972 at age 101, the release said.
