Rudy’s raises funds for local cancer support group

Rudy's taco prostate cancer fundraiser

Rudy’s Tacos is again raising money this month for Us Too Greater Quad Cities, a local prostate cancer support group that advocates for and supports prostate cancer patients and their families.

One in six men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, according to a news release. While it often can be treated successfully with early detection, one in 36 will die from the disease.

Rudy’s Tacos founder, Rudy Quijas, was one in 36. He was 55 when he died from prostate cancer.

“My father wanted us to promote early prostate testing. That way, other families could avoid the premature loss of a loved one,” Kevin Quijas, co-owner of Rudy’s corporate, said in the release.

“As we know, prostate cancer is very manageable if it is detected early.”

Donations may be made in person at Rudy’s, and those who donate will receive a special coupon. Money raised will help counsel men and their families, provide screenings for those who are eligible and more.

Rudy’s wants all men who are eligible to get screened for prostate cancer. That includes men who are ages 50 or older with no family history of prostate cancer, and men ages 40 or older who have a high risk of developing prostate cancer, such as African Americans and men who have one or more relatives (including their father, brother, son or uncle) who was diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65.

Rudy’s Tacos was founded in 1973 by Rudy and Marilyn Quijas in the Village of East Davenport. Today, Rudy’s has 11 other locations in Iowa and Illinois..

In addition to founding Rudy’s, Mr. Quijas was an Air Force veteran, and a member of the East Davenport Turners, Elks Lodge 298 and Davenport Moose Lodge. He also sponsored Little League and softball teams, as well as Rudy’s Golf Tournament, Mexican American traveling basketball and fast-pitch softball teams, according to the release. He enjoyed golf, family events and entertaining friends.
