QC Environmental Film Series offers Nov. 2 sneak peek

    The Quad Cities Environmental Film Series will host a free sneak peek event on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the St. Ambrose Galvin Fine Arts Center, 2101 Gaines St., Davenport.

    The event kicks off with “Enviro Connect” in the lobby from 2-3 p.m.

    A screening of “My Octopus Teacher” will begin at 3 p.m. It will be followed by a reflection and discussion from 4:30-5 p.m. Speakers are Callie Boatright, Aquarist II (Octopus Handler), and Megan Hahn. She is education manager at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, Dubuque, Iowa.

    Admission is free and includes drawings and popcorn. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook.

    The film series, now in its sixth year, brings a variety of environmental films and talks to the area. It is sponsored by River Action Quad Cities, Partners of Scott County Watersheds and Sierra Club Eagle View Group, Fourth Wall Films and Nahant Marsh. They will be presented at the Galvin Fine Arts Center.

     Upcoming films in the series are: 

    • Jan 18, 2026, “Out There” –  A young filmmaker sets out on a 10,000-mile exploration of the national parks with his childhood best friend during the centennial year of the formation of the National Park Service, recording stories of its workers and visitors.
    • Jan 25, “Out of Plain Sight” – A haunting tip prompts a Los Angeles Times reporter to discover that as many as half a million barrels of toxic waste had been dumped into the ocean, just off the coast of Southern California.
    • Feb 1, “Beaver Fever” – From the series Wild Hope, This film explores the environmental impact of reintroducing beavers to Great Britain. They were hunted to extinction there centuries ago.
    • Feb. 8, “The Cigarette Surf Board” – This documentary is about surfer Taylor Lane. He built a functional surfboard from 10,000 cigarette butts to raise awareness about ocean pollution and the environmental impact of single-use filters.
    • Feb. 15, double feature “Kelp” and “The Green Buffalo” – “Kelp!” is a 2024 environmental film directed by Blake McWilliam. It follows Frances Ward as she establishes a kelp farm on Canada’s west coast with no prior experience. Her journey highlights how individual effort can lead to significant, sustainable change. “The Green Buffalo” is a 2024 short documentary film by Patagonia. It follows the Lower Sioux Indian Community in Minnesota as they pioneer a sustainable building project using hempcrete.
    • March 1, “Reef Builders” – The film chronicles the worldwide coral reef restoration efforts of the Sheba Hope Grows program. It highlights challenges and successes of marine biologists and local communities.
