For the fifth year, River Action is partnering with the Eagle View Group of the Sierra Club, Nahant Marsh Education Center, the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and the Truth First Film Alliance to host the Environmental Film Series, beginning Sunday, Jan. 21.

The six-film series will be held on Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Figge Art Museum, 225 W. Second St., Davenport.

This year’s lineup and screening dates are:

  • Jan. 21: “All that Breathes” — As black kite birds of prey fall from New Delhi’s skies, two brothers care for them in a makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement, according to a news release from River Action. The reflection speaker will be Dave Murcia, director of the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center.
  • Jan. 28: “Last Paddle?” — This film chronicles the life and river conservation and restoration efforts of renowned river advocate Mark Angelo, who has paddled more than 1,000 rivers in over 100 countries, the release states. The film is hosted by the Clean Sphere student group at Black Hawk College, Moline. The reflection speaker will be Dan Breidenstein, vice chair of Living Lands & Waters, based in East Moline.
  • Feb. 4: “The Woman Who Loves Giraffes” — In 1956, 25-year-old biologist Anne Innis Dagg took a solo journey to South Africa to become the first person to study giraffe behavior in the wild, according to the release. She was absent from the giraffe world for 50 years until her triumphant return, celebrated with a journey back to South Africa. The reflection speaker will be Joel Vanderbush, curator of conservation and education at Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley.

This film is hosted by the student Sierra Club at Augustana College, Rock Island. The reflection speaker will be announced at a later date.
  • March 3: “Who Are the Marcuses?” — This documentary covers the lives of Holocaust survivors Lottie and Howard Marcus, an unassuming couple from New York whose surprising donation of $500 million to the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the academic Israeli institution that furthers water technology research, inspired peace and climate action, the release states. This film is hosted by the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities. The reflection speaker will be announced at a later date.
