ELDRIDGE – A local, family-owned grocery store is in the process of being sold to Hy-Vee, Inc.The owner of North Scott Foods, 425 E. LeClaire Road, Eldridge, said the store has been sold to Hy-Vee, but the ownership transition will not take place until April. A North Scott Foods employee told the QCBJ on Thursday, Feb. 9, that there were no managers available to comment on the sale. However, the store’s owner, Steve Grolmus, posted this on the North Scott Foods Facebook page Thursday afternoon: “As most of you have heard by now, I am retiring and have sold our business to Hy-Vee. We have been approached a number of times in the last few years, and have decided the time is right. This transition will take place in early April.“It has been an honor and privilege for my family to serve and support this awesome community for the past 45 years. You will continue to see the same friendly, hard-working faces as Hy-Vee will be retaining all of our staff.”In another Facebook post Thursday, Mr. Grolmus said he wanted to clear up some “misinformation” on the sale: “Hy-Vee did not alert my employees. They had representatives at the store on Wednesday. I was the one to personally notify my staff of the transition and did so on Tuesday.”A Hy-Vee official on Thursday also confirmed the sale of North Scott Foods is in the works.“We are in the process of acquiring North Scott Foods. All current employees are aware and will be offered jobs with Hy-Vee. At this time, we do not have a timeline to release regarding the transition,” Dawn Buzynski, assistant vice president, communication for Hy-Vee, told the QCBJ.Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating more than 285 retail stores across eight Midwestern states with sales of more than $13 billion annually. It is headquartered in West Des Moines.
