Niabi Zoo will open for its 61st year at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, while the zoo continues to make repairs of damage caused by a snowstorm in January.

“The zoo welcomes visitors to enjoy its 40 acres of habitats, sure to make you smile. The more than 600 animals cannot wait to see you, too,” a news release stated. “Though the zoo experience may be a little different this year, the Zoo and the Foundation are excited to get things ready for the best experience possible. Thank you for being patient as the Zoo recovers.”

January snowstorms dumped about 25 inches of wet snow over a few days, causing damage to the big cat enclosure and several other buildings at Niabi. No animals were hurt in the damage. The Niabi Zoo Foundation has been working on raising funds for the snowstorm recovery.

“You have raised more than $12,000 with personal donations and $50,000 from Modern Woodmen,” the foundation said in a news release. “ The Modern Woodmen donation will support the reconstruction of the Bald Eagle Exhibit. To those who would like to contribute, Niabi Zoo Foundation guarantees that 100% of your donation is for the recovery. The Zoo staff worked more than 35 hours nonstop to move animals, clear snow, and secure enclosures. Your donation immediately supports this recovery. We appreciate your consideration in donating toward this effort.”

The foundation has a $100,000 goal. If you would like to donate, go here

Established in June 2020, the Niabi Zoo Foundation works with the Zoo and the Forest Preserves to fulfill their goal of bringing a grand plan for the future of the Zoo. The Foundation has supported exhibits such as the White Rhino, African Painted Dogs, and Prairie Dog Town and the virtual education, spineless wonders graphics, zoo computer server, and aid to Ukraine zoos. The next big goal is the grizzly bear.

The Foundation held its first Zoopocalypse 5k in October of 2023 and is planning another this October. Funds for this event are specific to The Grizzly Bear Exhibit.

“Working with the Niabi Zoo staff for the last four years has been incredible,” Krisan Steiger, Chair of the Niabi Zoo Foundation, said in the release. “Their knowledge, compassion, dedication to the animals, conservation, and education are profound. They all hold award-winning accomplishments, and their service and knowledge span the world. This inclusive education benefits Niabi Zoo and our community. Please consider meeting them someday for an inspirational experience.”

The Forest Preserved and Niabi Zoo is holding a public forum at 5:30 p.m. on May 14, at Niabi Zoo and is seeking the public’s input.
