The Life Breads Gluten-Free Bakery will open for business in the Hilltop Campus Village neighborhood of Davenport in April.

That’s the word from Meg Reed, business general manager of the new bakery that is setting up a storefront shop at 1509 N. Harrison St.

The bakery will “definitely open this month,” she said in a video posted on Life Bread’s Facebook page.

“Everything is coming together. … We’re so close. I can taste it,” said Ms. Reed in the April video post.

She added that almost everything is in place now for the bakery. Friends and family members showed up for a “painting party” on Tuesday, March 14 to paint interior walls at the business, and “Cat’s Corner.” That is a tribute set up within the bakery to Catherine “Cat” Herzog, who planned to open the bakery last fall, but died unexpectedly on Aug. 7.

“Cat’s Corner” features a photo of Ms. Herzog, along with several handprints and the slogan “Courage Above Tears.”

“We want to thank the community a thousand times for the amazing show of support! The only thing we have left to do is the baseboards and a shelf! Cat’s Corner is an amazing feature that we are so happy and proud to share. I hope to one day add a plaque which commemorates how amazing she was! We can’t wait to open her dream soon,” the bakery’s Facebook page said.

Ms. Reed, one of Ms. Herzog’s daughters, said that Life Breads is just waiting on health and fire inspections, and the arrival of tables for the business. The hope is to have a “soft opening” for business owners later this month before the official public opening of the bakery.

The bakery’s hours will likely be 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays, and perhaps open half days on Saturdays.

Plans for the Davenport storefront bakery started to unfold last summer. Setting up the business  was a “lifelong dream” of Ms. Herzog, said Ms. Reed.

Ms. Herzog was busy expanding and transforming the business into a storefront bakery in early August when she died unexpectedly. Later in August, Ms. Reed said the family was still committed to getting the bakery open, but plans had been delayed by the family tragedy.

Even though the bakery is not open yet, Life Breads continues to sell baked goods through its website.

Some of its offerings will include breads such as Happy Accident White Bread, Keto Loaf, Paleo Seed Bread; and other treats like muffins, chocolate glazed doughnuts and maple glazed doughnuts.
