More than 100 new ALDI grocery stores are being built or in the planning stages for this year across the nation. One is currently going up on West Kimberly Road, Davenport.

Officials with the Zeno Group, the media relations group representing the grocery chain, recently told the QCBJ they could not comment on the new Davenport store site. However, construction work appears to be moving forward at the Davenport site at the corner of West Kimberly Road and North Fairmount Street. That site, which is across the street from a branch of the I.H. Mississippi Valley Credit Union at 3646 W. Kimberly Road, has blue signs stating “Coming soon …” with an ALDI logo at the bottom.

The work site is also near the shopping center that is home to California Pho Vietnamese Cuisine, Vo Nails Spa and other businesses.

Work at the site started in June and continues this week. It’s not known when the store will be completed.

Early this year, ALDI officials announced the company plans to build 120 new stores across the nation this year.

“While inflation is undoubtedly driving unprecedented demand for affordable groceries, we know that once customers experience the ALDI difference, they keep shopping with us, even when the economy improves,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI U.S. in a news release. “Our growth is led by our customers, and they continue to want more ALDI locations coast-to-coast.”

The company has not released a list of the new 120 stores in the works. However, Aldi’s website does list about 20 new stores that recently opened or are about to open. That list can be found here. (The new Davenport store is not on it.)

This year’s planned expansion builds on a banner year in 2022 for the company. ALDI reported opening and remodeling 139 stores, welcoming about 9.4 million new customers and driving double-digit growth year over-year as shoppers sought relief from soaring food prices. The grocer is on track to continue that momentum this year, it said, opening 35 stores in the first quarter alone and welcoming 5.3 million new customers to its stores as of April 2023.

ALDI is also enhancing new and existing stores with eco- friendly features, including installing rooftop solar panels and eliminating plastic shopping bags.

As part of this national expansion, ALDI will add nearly 2,000 new employees to support the additional store count.

ALDI has more than 6,600 stores in 11 countries and about 2,300 stores in the U.S. There are currently two ALDI stores in Davenport, one in Moline, one in Bettendorf, one in Rock Island and one in Silvis.
