MUSCATINE, Iowa – When MuscaBus rolls out on Saturday, May 2, it will mark 45 years of the citywide bus service and of connecting neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and families.
To celebrate, all MuscaBus rides will be free Saturday offering regular riders and new ones a chance to explore the system, take a family outing, or simply enjoy a ride through the community it has served for nearly half a century.
Founded in 1981, MuscaBus began with a simple mission: provide safe, accessible, affordable transportation for the city’s residents. From a handful of routes at the start, the system has grown to serve thousands of riders each year through its fixed routes, paratransit services and on‑demand options.
In a Tuesday, April 28, city news release, Transit Manager Amy Fortenbacher says the anniversary is a moment to honor the people behind the system as much as the buses themselves.
“MuscaBus has always been about connection — connecting people to work, to school, to appointments, to each other,” she said. “Our drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, and riders have built something special over 45 years.”
In recent years, MuscaBus’ modern enhancements have made riding easier and more predictable. Next month, it will launch a real‑time bus tracking webpage enabling riders to be able to see their bus moving live on a map.
City Administrator Matt Mardesen says the system’s longevity is a testament to its value and a lifeline for residents. “It supports our workforce, strengthens our neighborhoods, and ensures mobility for everyone, regardless of age or ability,” he said.
Behind every MuscaBus route is a story — the early‑morning shift worker who relies on the Blue Route, the high school student catching a ride to practice, the senior who uses paratransit to get to medical appointments, and the families who hop on for summer activities.
Hop a free ride Saturday
The city said its drivers often become familiar faces to the ridership – sometimes even fixtures in their daily routines. Many have driven their same route for years, watching kids grow up, commuters change jobs, and neighborhoods evolve.
To mark the 45th anniversary, all MuscaBus routes — including paratransit — are free May 2. City leaders hope that with the celebration falling on a weekend families, students, and new riders will take the opportunity to explore the system. Whether it’s a ride to a park, or simply a chance to try a new route, the day is designed as a thank you to the community that has supported MuscaBus through the years.
As the city continues to grow, MuscaBus is planning for the future — exploring technology upgrades, sustainability improvements, and service enhancements.
The goal is simple: keep Muscatine moving, its manager said.
“We’re proud of our history, but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. MuscaBus will continue to evolve with our community,” Ms. Fortenbacher said.
