Life Bread Bakery expected to open in March

A new bakery in Davenport’s Hilltop Campus Village area could open in the next couple of weeks.

The Life Breads Gluten-Free Bakery at 1509 N. Harrison St. could open sometime in March, said Meg Reed, the business general manager of the bakery.

“Our build-out is finished and we’re just waiting on final inspection. Then we have two more inspections and painting. It’s looking like a March opening is very possible,” Ms. Reed recently told the QCBJ.

In a recent update on the project on Life Bread’s Facebook page, Ms. Reed gave a video tour of the new bakery. She showed new equipment, countertop work, plumbing, and new office and storage space, as well as other in-progress projects in the bakery.

Ms. Reed and other family members had hoped to open the bakery in October.

“Unfortunately, we are delayed into 2023, but hope to have all permits and licenses set before the end of the year. So, when the (store) build-out begins, we can open swiftly thereafter,” Ms. Reed said in a message to the QCBJ in late 2022.

Plans for the Davenport storefront bakery began to unfold last summer. Setting up the business  was a “lifelong dream” of Catherine “Cat” Herzog, said Ms. Reed, who is one of Ms. Herzog’s daughters.

Ms. Herzog was busy expanding and transforming the business into a storefront bakery when she died unexpectedly on Aug. 7. Later in August, Ms. Reed said the family still was committed to getting the bakery open, but plans had been delayed by the family tragedy.

“The future is, we are keeping on moving. … The ship will keep sailing. Everything is picking up speed again,” Ms. Reed previously told the QCBJ.
