Honor Flight of the Quad Cities has announced its 56th Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., will transport nearly 90 veterans who served during our conflicts and enable them to visit the national monuments built in their honor.Â
The full-day flight will be on Tuesday, April 4. Most of the veterans scheduled for the flight served during the Vietnam conflict, and some will be visiting the Vietnam memorial for the first time.
They will be accompanied by 60 trained volunteer guardians who will assist them throughout the day.
This flight is scheduled to have a 100-year-old veteran of World War II. He will have a special caregiver as a guardian. There also will be a woman veteran on the flight. To honor her, and all women vets, there will be a stop at the Military Women’s Memorial.
The flight will be commanded by Mike Haney, an Air Force veteran, and his deputy. They will be assisted by three experienced, volunteer bus captains.
At the end of the day, at about 10 p.m., the veterans will return to the Quad City International Airport. The public is invited to come to the Moline airport and give the veterans a warm reception and welcome home. Parking at the airport will be free for the event.
Any person who was on active duty during WWII, Korea or Vietnam is invited to take an Honor Flight and fill out an application to send (along with a DD214) to Honor Flight c/o Ridgecrest Village 4130 Northwest Blvd., Davenport, IA 52806.Â
Those interested in participating as a flight guardian to assist veterans (some may be in a wheelchair) also may fill out an application. All applications are available at the website at www.honorflightqc.org. People can also find them at [email protected].
