A new Harbor Freight Tools store will officially open its new Moline location at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
The store is located at 4401 27th St., in the former Gordmans department store at SouthPark Mall. It will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday.
This new store marks the 40th store in Illinois for Harbor Freight Tools and the first in the Illinois Quad Cities. The company currently has three stores in the Iowa Quad Cities region, including Davenport, Muscatine and Clinton.
The company, which hires locally, has brought between 25-30 new jobs to the surrounding community, according to a news release from Harbor Freight.
“Our team is ready to serve and deliver value to customers in Moline and all of Rock Island County,” said Ted Pitsoulakis, the store manager. “At Harbor Freight, we recognize that now, more than ever, our customers depend on us for the tools they need to get the job done at an affordable price.”
Craig Hoffman, Harbor Freight’s director of corporate communications and content, told the QCBJ this summer that the company began renovation work in June on the vacant big box store.
“This particular location, which will take up a portion of the former Gordmans department store, will be 15,300 square feet, which is smaller than the so-called ‘Big Box’ stores in our category, and which we feel is a competitive advantage. We also chose to open in Moline because we feel there is a wide pool of qualified applicants to join our team,” he said.
The Gordmans department store near SouthPark closed in the fall of 2020, according to the company’s website.
“We are quite excited to see the commercial reuse of the former Gordmans building at the SouthPark Mall,” Bob Vitas, Moline city administrator, told the QCBJ this summer. “Harbor Freight is a great addition to the City of Moline and will serve to draw more customers to this critical commercial area of the city.”
The store will stock a full selection of tools and equipment in categories including automotive, air and power tools, storage, outdoor power equipment, generators, welding supplies, shop equipment, hand tools and much more. The stores are smaller and much easier to shop than the huge home centers, the company said.
Harbor Freight is a top retailer of tools at low prices, and is headquartered in Calabasas, California, according to the company’s website.
The company opened its first store in 1980. Today, Harbor Freight Tools has more than 1,300 stores across the country, 25,000 associates and more than 40 million customers.
