Gilda’s offers Camp Genesis for youth touched by cancer

MAQUOKETA, Iowa – Gilda’s Club is offering a free residential camp experience for children and teens (grades 4 to 9) who have been impacted by cancer. This is a collaborative camp partnership with Gilda’s Club Quad Cities, Camp Shalom and Genesis Cancer Care Institute.

Camp Genesis will run from Sunday to Friday, June 16-21.

An application and Youth Participant form must be filled out for the application to be considered. Applications can be completed at www.gildasclubqc.org/camp.

Priority will be given to first-time campers, those with a loved one in active treatment, and those who have recently lost a loved one to cancer.

Camp Genesis is free thanks to the generous support of Genesis Cancer Care Institute through funding from Genesis Foundation.

Kids can get to know other youths impacted by cancer while also having fun with activities such as archery, canoeing, rope courses, campfire circles, camp songs, and swimming. Camp Genesis also includes group activities with Gilda’s Club Quad Cities staff to talk about cancer and emotions as well as a day trip to Genesis Cancer Care Institute in Davenport.

This day trip includes a hands-on tour of the hospital, where campers get to meet with doctors and staff and see everything involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as ask questions in a safe environment. This experience helps to make the cancer journey less frightening, Gilda’s Club said. As a parent, you will be able to know that your child is in a safe environment and building relationships with other campers who are going through similar situations.
