Gas & Electric Credit Union earns top performer award

Gas & Electric Credit Union (GECU), Rock Island, has been awarded a Member Benefits Top Performance Award for the fourth year in a row.

Located downtown, GECU received the honor from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the only national association advocating on behalf of all of America’s credit unions.

The award recognizes GECU as one of the best in the nation for providing the highest financial benefit to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher deposit yields, and lower and fewer fees when compared to banks. CUNA estimates that in 2021, GECU saved the average household $647 (and up to $1,179 for high-use member households) over the 12-month period.

“I am so very proud of our team here at GECU and the outstanding service we provide to members every single day,” GECU President Daryl Empen said in a news release. “Our mission is to improve the financial well-being of members – not to be the biggest institution around, but simply the best.”

He added that winning the award for a fourth consecutive year shows “that our efforts truly do make a difference.”

“When you combine our fantastic member service with the benefits we give back to our members, we believe we are among the best credit unions in the country,” Mr. Empen said.

Founded in 1935, GECU has $110 million in assets and 5,500 members. Its members represent the employees, retirees and family members of MidAmerican Energy Co., the City of Rock Island, Bitco Insurance Co., Illinois Casualty Co., the Corps of Engineers Rock Island District, Friendship Manor, as well as numerous other businesses including many in Downtown Rock Island.
