The Quad Cities three transit systems are encouraging Quad Citians to celebrate National Bike to Work Week by combining their bike commute with a free public transit ride next week.

To support intermodal transportation and recognize the Bike to Work campaign, the transit systems of Davenport CitiBus, Bettendorf Transit and MetroLINK are offering free rides to passengers who bring a bike along for any portion of their trip during National Bike to Work Week (Monday to Sunday,  May 11-17).

Riders should be aware that space could be limited as each bus can accommodate up to two bikes on the rack at a time. Electric bicycles are permitted provided they meet standard bicycle specifications, including weighing less than 50 pounds, tires no wider than 2.5 inches and an integrated lithium battery.

In a joint news release, the systems said “Whether you’re heading to work, out for exercise, or just enjoying the day, utilizing public transit in conjunction with your bike extends the distance you can travel and multiplies your options.”

“We’re happy to continue to support Bike to Work Week by offering the ‘your bike is your fare’ promotion,” Austin Whelan, Bettendorf Transit’s operations manager, said in a news release. “This week is great for promoting inter-modal transportation throughout the Quad Cities and helps to showcase the unique ways riders can utilize trails and public transit to multiply their travel options.”
