BUFFALO, Iowa – Continental Cement Co. LLC will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, Monday, March 20, to celebrate completion of a new $30 million cement storage dome at its facility here.

Continental, a subsidiary of Summit Materials Inc., will hold the event at 2 p.m. at its 301 Front St. facility. The celebration will include state and local officials, customers, suppliers and Summit and Continental company leaders.

The dome provides significant additional storage, which will allow Continental to replace previously used winter storage barges. The cement plant, also known as its Davenport operation, will improve the company’s ability to serve its customers, the Denver, Colorado-based Summit Materials said in a news release.

“The investment by Summit Materials of approximately $30 million in the largest cement storage dome in North America, represents a strong vote of confidence in Continental cement and a commitment to sustained operations and investment in the State of Iowa,” Continental Cement President David Loomes said in the release.

The event also will detail plans for an additional $32 million investment by Continental to expand its Green America Recycling operation. That project will allow the longtime cement plant to replace approximately 55% of its fossil fuel consumption with non-hazardous waste.

Continental Cement, based in Chesterfield, Missouri, is a leading provider of cement with plants in Davenport (Buffalo) and Hannibal, Missouri, as well as nine distribution terminals along the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and New Orleans. The company began producing cement in 1903 in Hannibal.

Its parent company, Summit Materials, supplies aggregates, cement, ready-mix concrete and asphalt in the United States and British Columbia, Canada.
