Registration is now open for the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) 2025 Business Horizons summer program, which is available to all Iowa high school students in grades 9-12.
This year marks the 42nd edition of the program, scheduled for Sunday to Thursday, July 13-17, at Drake University, Des Moines.
Participants will work in teams to tackle a real-world challenge in the week-long program. They will develop a product or service as the foundation for their new business idea. At the end of the week, teams will pitch their ideas to investors, create infomercials, and showcase their projects at a trade show, all in front of live judging panels and their peers.
The program also includes presentations by Iowa industry experts. They will share valuable insights. Other highlights include leadership development activities, local business tours, independent living experiences, and after-hours social events.
In an ABI news release, Brionna Dornbusch, a participant from North High School, said “Business Horizons opened many doors for me. It taught me the importance of teamwork and productivity, as well as the background of business, how to start a company, the power of networking and so much more.”
Help building network
No matter their career interests, the program offers crucial, future-focused insights and transferable leadership abilities. In addition, it helps students build a network of friends and mentors in the community.
“Business Horizons is an experience that prepares students for leadership roles and future careers, regardless of their interests,” Jessi McQuerrey, director of programs at the ABI Foundation, said in the release. “The program is uniquely designed to help students develop essential skills like critical thinking, resilience, time management, creativity, and strategic problem-solving. They learn to effectively collaborate on innovative concepts and ideas with a team of peers from across Iowa, a practice that will set them up for success in any environment.”
The program cost is $400. It covers all meals, lodging, activities, and materials. Students who register by Friday, May 30, will receive a $50 discount. Need-based financial assistance is available. Registrations will be accepted through Saturday, July 5, or until the program is filled.
