“So many great partners needed to come together to get the stars aligned for this project. … It’s the synergy that makes it all work,” said Dan Huber, co-owner of the Frontier Hospitality Group (FHG). The Quad Cities hotel development company is building the new SpringHill Suites at 5235 Competition Drive. Mr. Huber and more than 50 business and community leaders helped welcome the start of construction during a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon, May 14, at the hotel site. (Actually, work began on the hotel a few weeks ago and continued Tuesday afternoon. That work was apparent during the ceremony as a work crew was busy building an elevator shaft.)The hotel site is near the TBK Bank Sports Complex and next door to the new Iron Tee Golf entertainment facility.Once completed, SpringHill Suites will be another element to attract people to The Plex area, and help create a positive image for the entire Quad Cities region, several business leaders said during the ceremony.“As people come to the Quad Cities, we want them to come back again, again and again,” said Dave Herrell, president and CEO of Visit Quad Cities. In addition to attracting people, features like the new hotel will be great for the local economy because they are key to attracting “non-resident revenues” to the region,” Mr. Herrell added. The new hotel is one of many business projects in the works near the TBK Bank Sports Complex that will bring in that out-of-town money. For instance, in March, ORA Orthopedics announced it will build a new $50 million, state-of-the-art clinic and outpatient surgery center in the area. A few of the other business developments include: Bettendorf Family Dental recently opened; a new 288-unit apartment home complex known as Authentix Bettendorf will start construction soon; a new $12 million indoor sports facility has started construction; a new Jersey Mike’s Subs sandwich shop opened in April; and the Iron Tee Golf entertainment facility opened for business this week.In fact, during Tuesday’s ceremony, Mr. Huber noted that Iron Tee was set to have its ribbon-cutting ceremony shortly after the hotel groundbreaking. Because of that, he joked that the hotel ceremony might not be the biggest business news of the day. “We’re announcing an $18 million investment and we’re just a warm-up act for the Iron Tee,” he added. Here are some details and features of the new Springhill Suites:
The hotel will have 86 rooms with separate areas in each room to sleep, work and relax. “The sports teams are going to love these rooms. It gives them extra space,” Mr. Huber said.
Each room will have a trundle sofa daybed, microwave and mini-fridge.
Amenities will include a free breakfast, indoor swimming pool, fitness room, a meeting room and a 24-hour market.
The building will span 58,640 square feet.
Construction work began in February and is scheduled to be completed next April.
Partners on the project include the Russell company, IMEG Corp. and Ramaker. This is the ninth project Russell is completing with FHG.
Business officials on Tuesday noted that the many features of the new SpringHill Suites will be a welcome addition to the other neighboring businesses at The Plex. Mr. Huber noted that the TBK Bank Sports Complex and the new Iron Tee are “bringing in legions of sports fans” from around the country. And soon, all those fans will have another place to stay while attending sporting events.FHG also was the developer and owner of the Cambria Hotel Quad Cities – the first hotel to be built in the Plex Area. Those businesses working together are a great example of synergy, he said.“We are all in this together,” Mr. Huber added.
