Alzheimer’s Association invests record $100M in research

Alzheimer's Association research caregiver support Memories in the Making caregivers

The Alzheimer’s Association has announced a landmark $100 million investment in research initiatives in 2023 — the largest single-year investment since the organization’s founding in 1980, according to a news release.

Throughout 2023, the Alzheimer’s Association funded 271 scientific investigations examining topics across the spectrum of dementia science. The association’s global, cumulative impact on research now includes more than $360 million invested in more than 1,000 active research projects in 53 countries, spanning six continents.

In Iowa alone, nearly $500,000 has been awarded this year to advance research efforts, and in Illinois, nearly $5 million has been awarded. This includes research being conducted in Iowa City; Chicago; and Urbana, Illinois, the release states.

In addition to research grant funding, the association supports a wide range of global leadership initiatives, including global scientific/medical conferences; three influential peer-reviewed journals; TrialMatch, which is a free clinical studies matching service; and the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, killing more Americans than diabetes, and more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined, according to the release.

There are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, and by 2050, that number is projected to increase to nearly 13 million, barring the development of breakthroughs to prevent, slow or stop the disease.
