IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business has announced a new certificate program to help working professionals who want to advance in their careers in the fast-growing field of risk management and insurance.
The four-class program can be taken fully online in as little as 12 months and can be embedded as part of the Iowa MBA. To apply, prospective students must have a bachelor’s degree and 18 months of professional experience.
Thomas Berry-Stoelzle, professor of finance and director of the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) major, said insurance companies are expected to continue to grow and add more employees. In a news release, he said RMI professionals help companies and individuals identify risk exposures, determine how it could impact them and how much it would cost, and put processes and protections in place, like insurance contracts.
“Students in the Risk Management and Insurance certificate program will gain an understanding of the unique landscape of insurance along with the ability to make strategic recommendations that will help their employers avoid undue risk,” Mr. Berry-Stoelzle added.
Classes are designed for people who work in the insurance industry but have no background in insurance or finance and want to get up to speed, he said. It also is designed for those working for insurance companies but not in a risk management capacity and want to understand the industry better; and people working outside the industry and looking for a career change.
