Davenport Fire Dept. celebrates 140 years with open houses

The Davenport Fire Department is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year with a series of open house events at its fire stations.

The Saturday open houses begin April 9 and run through Oct. 8 and run from 9-10:20 a.m.

The open house events will take place at these Davenport stations:

  • April 9: Station 3, 3506 Harrison St.
  • May 14:  Station 4, 1805 E. Locust St.
  • June 11: Station 5, 2808 Telegraph Road.
  • July 9: Station 6, 1735 W. Pleasant St.
  • Aug. 13: Station 7, 2302 W. 67th St.
  • Sept. 10: Station 8, 2802 E. 53rd St.
  • Oct. 8: Central Station, 331 Scott St.

“The Davenport Fire Department is proud to be a progressive department, but we want to remember and celebrate our heritage,” Davenport Fire Chief Mike Carlsten said. “The majority of the time, the community only sees the fire department when we are responding to incidents. These open houses will give the community a chance to talk with firefighters and learn about the Davenport Fire Department and the work these firefighters do every day.”

Attendees can enjoy snacks, tour the stations and meet Davenport firefighters. There will be information about the department’s history and the functions of each station, as well as photographs of the new Station 3 under construction at 42nd and Brady streets. It is expected to be completed in 2023.

In 1882, the Davenport City Council authorized the formation of a municipal fire department marking the formal creation of the Davenport Fire Department.
