In a move that expands its capabilities in Florida, Rock Island-based IMEG has acquired MARLIN Engineering, a 35-year-old transportation engineering and planning firm with locations across the Sunshine State.

In a news release Thursday, May 7, IMEG announced the latest addition to its nationwide leading engineering design firm. MARLIN Engineering is recognized for its expertise in traffic engineering, bridge operations and inspection, roadway design, surveying, and advanced data and analytics.

Financial details of the transaction, which closed Friday, May 1, were not disclosed.

The acquisition marks a significant expansion of IMEG’s capabilities in Florida – adding transportation engineering and planning to its existing MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) and structural services, the firm said. With IMEG locations in Pensacola and Jacksonville, these will be its first southern Florida offices.

Founded in 1991, MARLIN Engineering has offices in Palmetto Bay, the Miami/Medley region, Fort Lauderdale, and Tallahassee. The firm is known for its forward-thinking approach to mobility, safety, and infrastructure performance. It supports public agencies and private clients through a combination of engineering expertise, technology, and data-driven insight.

“This acquisition represents an important step in IMEG’s continued growth and evolution in Florida,” Paul VanDuyne, IMEG president and CEO, said in the release. “Adding transportation expertise strengthens our ability to serve clients more holistically – connecting infrastructure, buildings, and systems in ways that improve performance, resilience, and long-term value.”

The deal, which closed Friday, May 1, marks IMEG’s seventh acquisition in 2026.

Paul VanDuyneTogether, IMEG and MARLIN will bring a more connected approach to infrastructure delivery – linking transportation, building systems, and site development to better serve state and local agencies, municipalities, and private clients, the release said.

    Scaling services

The combined team also enhances IMEG’s ability to support projects from early planning and design while strengthening its presence across the broader southern U.S. region.

“Joining IMEG allows us to build on the strong foundation we’ve established while expanding what’s possible for our team and our clients,” Ramon Soria, MARLIN Engineering’s president and CEO, added in the release. “This partnership enhances our ability to scale our services – particularly in bridge inspection and transportation systems – while maintaining the client-focused approach that has defined our work.”

Mr. Soria, one of the firm’s co-founders, will continue in a leadership role at IMEG, supporting integration and ongoing growth. José Quintana and Armando Aguiar will also remain in key leadership roles, ensuring continuity for clients and staff, IMEG said. The team will continue to operate at its current locations as MARLIN, now IMEG.

The 90+ employees at MARLIN join IMEG’s growing footprint of 100 offices and 3,200 team members. Ranked among the top engineering firms in the U.S. (#4 on BD+C’s top Engineering Firms and #51 on ENR’s Top 500 Design Firms), IMEG transforms environments and communities through innovative, high-performance design and infrastructure solutions.
