WIU named a top midwest regional university by U.S. News

Western Illinois University (WIU) ranked 57th in the “Regional Universities Midwest” category in the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings for providing quality education and encouraging student achievement. 

In addition to its regional recognition, WIU stood out in several specialized categories:

  • 16th in Top Public Schools.
  • 55th in Best Value Schools.
  • 27th in Best Colleges for Veterans (tie).
  • 44th in Top Performers on Social Mobility (tie).

WIU also was recognized by U.S. News for its undergraduate engineering programs, the least debt and the highest proportion of classes under 20 students.

WIU President Kristi Mindrup commended the WIU community, faculty, staff and students in a news release for their efforts in providing a standout educational experience.

“U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of Western Illinois University’s commitment to veterans, value, and advancing social mobility reflects our dedication to creating opportunities for students to thrive,” she said in a news release. “Western’s excellent academic programs, outstanding faculty and staff, and engaging experiences in and out of the classroom ensure that students are prepared for success while in college, and throughout their lives as they make a meaningful impact on our communities, the region, and beyond.” 

The U.S. News Best Colleges rankings evaluate institutions on multiple criteria, including graduation and retention rates, social mobility, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. These accolades highlight WIU’s ongoing efforts to adapt to workforce needs and provide a robust educational experience.
