Have a Whitey’s ice cream cone and help out Bethany for Children & Family Services June 16 during Whitey’s 39th annual Cones for Kids event. Half of all cone sales on that day at all Whitey’s locations will be donated to the organization.
“Bethany is a fantastic cause and the support shown by the Quad City community has been amazing over the years. We are proud to continue the tradition,” Jeff Tunberg, co-owner of Whitey’s Ice Cream, said in a news release.
Christina McNamara-Schmidt, Bethany’s director of development and communication, said “Bethany continues to expand its caseload to help families stay together, place children in safe, loving homes, and get homeless individuals off the streets and into housing. The agency is grateful for its longstanding partnership with Whitey’s.”
Whitey’s Ice Cream was founded in 1933 by Chester “Whitey” Lindgren – nicknamed such due to his white-blonde hair. Bob Tunberg started working at Whitey’s Ice Cream in 1935. He eventually bought the business in 1953 with his wife, Norma. Bob and Norma’s sons, Jeff and Jon, joined the family business.
They eventually became co-owners when Bob passed away in 1991. Today there are eight locations throughout Illinois and Iowa with product available in grocery store chains across the Midwest.
Bethany for Children & Families was founded in 1899. It is a nonprofit, child welfare, mental health, community education, and social services provider for children and families in western Illinois and eastern Iowa. Offering more than programs and services, Bethany serves more than 17,000 children and families annually.
