UnityPoint Health to offer free cooking classes

UnityPoint Health again will offer free Cooking with Heart classes beginning next month, January 2024, at the Trinity Heart Center in Rock Island.

The interactive four-week cooking classes will be offered by experienced UnityPoint Health  dietitians who will help attendees make simple, affordable and heart-healthy changes to their eating — and have fun while doing it, UnityPoint said in a news release.

“We are honored to host this cooking series because of all of the wonderful benefits that participants get from eating with their health in mind,” said Teresa Pangan, prevention and wellness strategist at UnityPoint Health.

“We have seen firsthand the amazing results our classes have given attendees. They’re changing how they cook, learning new cooking skills and adopting new, healthier habits.”

The Cooking with Heart series is designed for all skill levels and focuses on evidenced-based nutritional information, according to organizers. Participants will learn simple, delicious recipes that focus on plants and other heart-healthy ingredients, as well as cooking skills to help transition to healthier eating.

“In the last four years, we have helped hundreds of people improve their overall health,” Kathy Pulley, director of cardiology services at UnityPoint Health – Trinity, said in the release. “We’ve seen amazing results from our Cooking with Heart participants. They’re losing weight, lowering their blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels and preventing chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes and hypertension.”

UnityPoint Health offers three cooking series, including Cooking with Heart Foundational, Cooking with Heart for Diabetes and Cooking with Heart for Cancer. All of the classes are taught in the state-of-the-art Cardiac Nutrition Center at Trinity Heart Center, 2701 17th St., Rock Island.

In-person and virtual classes are available. The classes are provided free thanks to the generosity of Trinity Health Foundation and Gilda’s Club of the Quad Cities donors, but registration is required.

Cooking with Heart for Diabetes is co-sponsored by Genesis Health System.
