UnityPoint Health receives award for cardiac performance

Governor's Volunteer Awards UnityPoint Health

UnityPoint Health – Trinity Bettendorf and Rock Island have been recognized with the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025, marking them as the only hospital in the Quad Cities region to receive this national honor.

The award signifies the hospitals’ consistent commitment to and success in providing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. Both facilities have met aggressive goals by treating patients according to the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

“This is more than a badge of honor – it means patients can trust they’re getting the highest level of heart care, with faster diagnosis, coordinated treatment and better outcomes when every second counts,” said Dr. Toyosi Olutade, chief medical officer at UnityPoint Health – Trinity.

Heart disease remains a significant health concern in the Quad Cities, contributing to nearly 25% of adult deaths. “We believe that’s too many,” stated Kathy Pulley, director of cardiology services at UnityPoint Health – Trinity. “This recognition reflects the expertise and compassion of our heart team and reinforces our commitment to providing the highest quality care, close to home, for every patient, every day.”

To earn the Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, hospitals must demonstrate sustained excellence in the Chest Pain – MI Registry for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) and perform at the highest level across specific performance measures. Participation in the registry involves a robust quality improvement process that utilizes data to enhance adherence to guideline recommendations and the overall quality of care for heart attack patients.

Trinity Bettendorf and Rock Island are among nine UnityPoint Health hospitals to receive performance achievement awards from the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry for 2025.

“We are thrilled to offer high-quality heart care to the communities we serve and to provide an exceptional patient experience,” said Dr. Gregory R. Johnson, SFHM, UnityPoint Health chief medical officer. “We know how much it means to have this level of care close to home and we are thankful for these awards that show we are the right choice for treating heart attacks.”

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than 800,000 Americans experience a heart attack annually. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely obstructs blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among other interventions. The Chest Pain – MI Registry empowers healthcare provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients in line with the most current, science-based guidelines. It also establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety, and outcomes of care provided to patients with coronary artery disease, particularly those at high risk for heart attacks.
