UnityPoint Health hosts free ‘Heart to Heart’ education class tonight

In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds, which translates to about 800,000 heart attacks every year, according to a news release from UnityPoint Health – Trinity, which cites the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

To spread the word about how to act quickly when someone is having a heart attack, UnityPoint Health – Trinity will host a free Heart to Heart Community Education Series from 5:30-6:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the Jardine Auditorium at UnityPoint Health – Rock Island, 2701 17th St.

During the session, UnityPoint Health – Trinity EMS Systems Coordinator Adam Sowells will present “What to Do in a Heart Emergency,” covering everything from the signs and symptoms of a heart attack to the first crucial steps and possible responses from first responders.

“You have the power to save a life. Understanding the risk and recognizing symptoms of a heart

attack could save your life or the life of a loved one,” Mr. Sowells said, in a news release. “How you respond to a heart attack can help minimize the damage to the heart and dramatically increase chances of survival.”

Heart to Heart is a free community educational series made possible in part by the generosity of donors to Trinity Health Foundation. While admission is free, registration is required through the website.

“We take to heart our mission as the region’s established leader in heart care and prevention,” said Kathy Pulley, director of cardiology services at UnityPoint Health – Trinity, in the release.

“We’re continuing our mission to reach more people with prevention education and tools to help them live longer and healthier lives.”
