In 2023, MercyOne hospitals across Iowa celebrated more than 8,200 births, including 153 sets of twins and one set of triplets.
Oliver was the top boy’s name in Des Moines, but Theodore topped lists in both Davenport and Waterloo. Eleanor and Sophia took top spots for girl names at several MercyOne hospitals.
MercyOne parents seemed to buck some of the recent trends reported by Babycenter.com. The website reports Olivia, Emma and Amelia as the top girl names for 2023 and Noah, Liam and Oliver as the top boy names.
Here is a breakdown of births per hospital and the most popular baby names by location:
- Genesis Medical Center, Davenport: Total births: 2,040; and 19 sets of twins. Top boy’s names: Lincoln and Theodore; and top girl’s names: Eleanor and Sophia.
- MercyOne Central Iowa, Des Moines Medical Center: Total births: 3,631; including 1,816 boys and 1,815 girls; and 92 sets of twins. Top boy’s names: Oliver, Liam and Henry; and top girl’s names: Eleanor, Harper, Ava and Emma.
- MercyOne Northeast Iowa, Waterloo Medical Center: Total births: 881 including 19 sets of twins and one set of triplets. Top boy names: Theodore/Theo, James and Jack; top girl names: Sophie/Sophia, Raelynn/Raylan, Isabelle/Isabella and Ella, Evelyn.
- MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City: Total births – 653 with 17 sets of twins. Top boy names: Theodore, Owen, Liam and Mateo. Top girl names: Adeline, Mia, Sophia, Charlotte, Emma and Aurora.
- MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center: Total Births: 653 with four sets of twins. Top boy names: Leo and Nolan. Top girl names: Ava and Charlotte.
- MercyOne Clinton Medical Center: Total births: 249. Top boy’s name: Emmett. Top girl’s name: Emma.
- MercyOne Newton Medical Center: Total births: 110 with two sets of twins. Top boy names: Sawyer and Asher. Top girl names: Lainee/Lainey.
